Actions Commemorating Victims of Terrorist Attacks Will Take Place in Moscow on the Third of September

On the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism, annually held on the third of September since 2005, the Muscovites will take part in a number of actions in memory of victims of terrorist attacks. One of the acts of remembrance and mourning will take place at the memorial to victims of the school hostage siege in the North Ossetian-Alanian town of Beslan on September 1-3, 2004.

The American Gold Medal of Honor Was Presented to Zurab Tsereteli

The Annual National Arts Club’s Gold Medal of Honor has been awarded to Zurab Tsereteli for his significant role in the promotion of art. Zurab Tsereteli is the first Russian artist who received this one of the most prestigious American awards in the field of culture. The Gold Medal of Honor was presented to the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli on June 4 by the National Arts Club’s President O. Aldon James at the ceremony within the framework of the annual Festival “Our Legacy” launched in New York. Gift of Zurab Tsereteli to the City of Yaroslavl

In honor of the 1000th anniversary of Yaroslavl the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli will present as a gift to the city a bronze bear that is a symbol of Yaroslavl. It will be a centerpiece of the city park in honor of its 1000th anniversary on the embankment of the Kotorosl River. Zurab Tsereteli has proposed his own artistic design – the bear standing on two legs is holding a big fish. The three-meter tall sculpture has already been completed and appreciated by the city authorities.

Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts Tair Salakhov Receives the CIS Stars of Commonwealth Award 2010

On April 9, in the Pashkov House of the Russian State Library in Moscow there was the first award ceremony for the CIS interstate award “Stars of Commonwealth” set up in 2008 by the CIS Council for Humanitarian Cooperation and CIS Interstate Foundation for Humanitarian Cooperation. Unknown Salakhov: Show of Works by the Celebrated Painter Tair Salakhov in London

From February 18-25, 2010 on show at Sotheby’s in London were over thirty canvases by the People’s Artist of the USSR, the Russian Federation and Azerbaijan, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts Tair Salakhov. The focus of the exhibition supported by BUTA Festival of Azerbaijani Art and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Great Britain was a monumental six-meter triptych “Country of Fires” (2007) – a pictorial hymn to the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan.

Events in Honor of the 1000th Anniversary of Yaroslavl Will Be Held in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris

From February 22-24, 2010 UNESCO Headquarters in Paris will host events in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the city of Yaroslavl. The Yaroslavl land will be represented by the Governor of Yaroslavl Region Sergei Vakhrukov, the Mayor of Yaroslavl Victor Volonchunas and the first woman in space Valentina Tereshkova. The focus of the events will be an exhibition “Ten Centuries – Ten Histories”.

Zurab Tsereteli is a Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor

The highest decoration of France will be presented to the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. The National Order of the Legion of Honor (Ordre national de la Legion d’honneur) was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and is awarded by the President of France. In his letter dated February 1, 2010 the French President Nicolas Sarkozy has specially noted: “This authoritative decoration which I have considered it necessary to confer on you from my personal reserves of crosses is an expression of gratitude for your services to this country and proved devotion to France”.

The portrait of Gury Marchuk, the prominent Russian scientist in the fields of computational mathematics and physics of atmosphere, President of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1986-1991 has been created by the People’s Artist of Russia Vasily Nesterenko. Memorial Plaque Commemorating the Soviet Politician and Diplomat Andrei Gromyko (1909-1989) Was Unveiled in Moscow

To mark the 100th birth anniversary of the eminent diplomat and politician Andrei Gromyko, a memorial plaque designed by Zurab Tsereteli was unveiled on the wall of the house in Leontievsky Pereulok where he had lived from 1963 till 1989. Andrei Gromyko served as Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union from 1957 till 1985 and was the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet in 1985-1988.

On March 1, 2009 at the handover ceremony in the city of Bari, the President of the Republic of Italy Giorgio Napolitano presented Russian President Dmitry Medvedev with symbolic keys of the complex of the Russian Orthodox Church community in Bari including the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas the Wonder Worker and a number of residential buildings.

Monument to the Patriarch in Moscow

He created a full-length sculptural portrait of the Patriarch in 2003 within My Contemporaries series. Zurab Tsereteli met with Alexy II more than once, particularly during his work on the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The sculptor has collected a lot of the Patriarch’s photographs that he is going to show to the public in February.

Zurab Tsereteli Will Give Two Masterclasses For Participants of the Festival of Children’s Artworks

On December 11, 2008 Tsereteli Art Gallery will present the 4th International Festival of Children’s Artworks “Thousands of Suns” featuring over 500 paintings by young artists aged four to seventeen from eighteen countries. Among the participants are physically challenged and orphan children. It has become a tradition to start the Festival with masterclasses by President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. The artist will give two three-hour masterclasses for over 60 children.

Zurab Tsereteli Is a Member of the Council of Trustees for the Memorial to Dmitri Pozharsky to Be Recreated in Suzdal

In St. Euthymius monastery in Suzdal on the National Unity Day, November 4, the Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal Eulogius consecrated the cross installed on the burial place of the national hero Dmitri Pozharsky (1578-1642) and the foundation stone for the marble chapel of Dmitri Pozharsky to be recreated according to the original destroyed in 1933. The ceremony was attended by Georgy Poltavchenko, Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Central Federal District; Alexander Avdeev, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation; Nikolai Vinogradov, Governor of Vladimir Region. The chapel is planned to be completed by November 4th, 2009.

The 17th Century Unique Tapestry Will Be Brought Back to the Research Library of the Russian Academy of Arts after Restoration

In December, 2008 after the restoration work, the 17th century unique tapestry “Victory of Alexander the Macedonian Over the Persian Tsar Darius” (the Battle at Arbela), one from the series of five spalliere entitled History of Alexander the Macedonian will be returned to the interiors of the Research Library of the Russian Academy of Arts. Only two of them have survived till these days.

November 4: National Unity Day in Russia

On November 4th, 2008 Russia celebrates the National Unity Day: the state holiday commemorating the liberation of Moscow from Polish invaders in 1612 by people’s volunteer corps. On November 4, 2005 the focus of the celebrations was in Nizhni Novgorod, where there was an unveiling ceremony for the replica of the monument to Minin and Pozharsky created by Zurab Tserteli for Nizhni Novgorod. The monument stands in front of the Cathedral of John the Baptist, the place where Kuzma Minin called to people for the national uprising and joining the people’s volunteer corps.

On July 14, 2008 Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts had a meeting with Paul Kulikovski, great-grandson of grand duchess Olga Alexandrovna, sibling of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. Paul Kulikovski is an economist and financier. He lives in Denmark, where Olga Romanova resided till the end of her life. The meeting has been also attended by Elena Ryurikova, director-general of a Charity Foundation set up in Moscow in 2006 by Dmitri Romanov, great great-grandson of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I. He is a president of the Foundation.

Annual Y. Orekhov Prizes Will Be Awarded to Young Sculptors

On June 10, 2008 in the Museum “Creative Legacy of Academician Yuri Orekhov” will be held the forth annual award ceremony for Y. Orekhov Prizes in the field of sculpture. The Prize was set up in 2005 by the Sculptor Foundation and the above Museum under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Arts to foster young talented sculptors. Yuri Orekhov (1927-2001) is one of the prominent Russian sculptors of the late 20th century who was appreciated both in Russia and internationally. He was a Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts and Honorary Member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara (Italy), winner of Lenin and State Prizes.

Zurab Tsereteli Was An Honorary Guest of Vladikavkaz International Film Festival

On June 5, 2008 the celebrated artist Zurab Tsereteli took part in the closing ceremony of Vladikavkaz International Festival as an honorary guest invited by its President Akim Salbiev and the Jury Chairman Victoria Tokareva. Hippopotamus by Tsereteli Has Been Installed in Volgograd

The exotic animal has appeared in the Red Army district in Volgograd on the square in front of the children’s complex. Known for his huge monuments, this time Tsereteli has been over-modest: the figure is only about 0,5m tall. The sculptor says, that this artwork will destroy the stereotype of his being a creator of exclusively big sculptures.

Monument to the Founder of Khabarovsk by Alexander Rukavishnikov Will Be Unveiled on the Eve of the City’s 150th Anniversary

In early May, 2008 the monument to the Russian officer Jacob Diachenko, the founder of Khabarovsk will be inaugurated near the site where the Russian troops first landed in the region. The 4m tall bronze sculpture to be installed on the 4m tall base has been designed by the Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Alexander Rukavisjnikov in honor of the city’s 150th anniversary.

The Viva Academia art project of Omsk Regional M. Vrubel Museum of Fine Arts in honor of the 250th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Arts has been highly appreciated by the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. He noted the high professional level of the art project which comprised three exhibitions: Russian Graphic Art of the 18th-20th century; Russian Prints of the Late 19th – Early 20th century; Viva Academia! Painting, Sculpture of the 19th-21th Century. They offered a groundbreaking exploration of the role of the Academy since its foundation. On show were 160 exhibits from the Omsk Regional Museum collection, many of them were presented to the public for the first time.

Zurab Tsereteli Receives the Chilean Order of Bernardo O’Higgins

Today, the Ambassador of Chili to the Russian Federation Augusto Parro Munos has announced that the President of the Russian Academy of Arts, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Zurab Tsereteli has been awarded the Order of Bernardo O’Higgins in the highest rank of Grand Cross by the Government of Chile. DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR THE MONUMENT TO THE STRUGGLE AGAINST WORLD TERRORISM, SEPTEMBER 11, 2006

On September 11, 2006 in the United States in the city of Bayonne, New Jersey there was a dedication ceremony for the monument to the struggle against world terrorism. The monument by Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of Russia, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador stands opposite lower Manhattan where the World Trade Center towers stood and about three thousand people became victims of the attacks. The monumental composition was presented as a gift from the Russian President Vladimir Putin, the people of Russia to the people of the United States on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy symbolizing, that Russia, which also experienced acts of terrorism not once, shared the grief of losses with the United States.
